String Method

The most accurate DIY way to measure poke / tuck at home

How to do it
1
Park on a flat surface with wheels pointing straight ahead.
2
Run a taut string along the side of the car, front arch to rear arch, at bumper height on jack stands.
3
Pull flush against the widest point of the bodywork — the fender lip.
4
Measure the gap between the string and the outer rim face (not the tyre).
5
Record: gap → tucked (+mm); string hits tyre → poking (−mm).
Pro tip: Measure at 3 o'clock (centre of wheel). Do both front and rear — they're often different.
